We California's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Sacramento rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Sacramento pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
- Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
- Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
- Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
- When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires
Sacramento Rodent Removal Tip:
Is One Rat a Sign That There Are More Present?
It is a moment that most people dread. You hear a soft scratching or skittering noise. You look and see a furry body, beady eyes, whiskers, sharp teeth, and a worm-like tail. It is a rat running around in your home or business. Rats freak a lot of people out because of their appearance. Particularly their teeth and small claws. They evoke a primal sense of dread in a lot of people because of their history of spreading disease. Not to mention the idea of them crawling on you when you are unaware!
That being the case, when you see one rat it is common to wonder about the rats that you are not seeing. Many people assume that the presence of one rat means that there are many more rats around that are hidden. It can lead to panic. You may be able to trap the rat you see but what are you to do about the ones you can't see? In this article, we will explore the age-old question of whether seeing one rat means that there are many more that you can't see.
To begin with, rats are indeed social creatures and they do exist in groups. They are also notoriously prolific breeders. A single female rat can birth up to six litters a year. It is common for each litter to have between five and ten rat pups. There is no doubt that rat populations can increase quickly. They live in social groups (colonies) where they have well-defined pecking orders. The largest male rat is usually the alpha male and will defend his choice of territory, mates, and food sites, even aggressively chasing off other subordinate males. They are known to recognize members of their colonies and their place in the pecking order. Interestingly, despite living in colonies, rats are actually rather solitary when they're active and they don't really move together in packs. They generally do not behave in a cooperative or coordinated fashion. Rats move along their established routes alone but one rat may follow another along the same routes. On the whole, rats have limited movement around where they have access to food and shelter. Therefore, seeing one rat doesn't automatically mean that there are large numbers of rats following behind but they may be nearby.
Signs you have a rat infestation
So, if seeing one rat scurrying along doesn't automatically mean you are about to be overrun, how can you tell if you have a rat infestation? There are a few signs to look for that might indicate that you have a true infestation of many rats. Did you see that lone rat during the day or at night? As a rule, rats are most active between dusk and dawn. They like things as quiet and deserted as possible. If you see a rat during the day it may be a sign of an overcrowded nest- meaning a lot of rats in your home or business. Rat droppings are also usually an indication of an infestation. They usually resemble small brown grains of rice. Urine from multiple rats will also carry a strong, unpleasant odor. Another sure sign of a rat infestation is food packages and containers that have been tampered with and spoiled. Rats rip the packaging open with their teeth and the packages will show signs of that tampering. Another sign of a rat infestation is evidence of gnawing and scratching on wood surfaces, linoleum, and even siding and insulation. They also have greasy fur and multiple rats might leave greasy smears on wood and glass surfaces. If you see any of these signs, along with sighting a rat, you probably have an infestation and it would be best to call in a professional exterminator.
